The issue happens because the text used in the PDF is a bit malformed and currently the iOS/iPadOS Zotero app is too strict, and it crashes when this malformed text is used. We have a fix though, which will be included in the next update.

If the documents are scanned without OCR, then it's just pages of images for Zotero, there are no characters to be selected for highlighting/underlining. Other readers may perform OCR on the fly to allow you to select characters, to some extend, but…

Hey @Freelove, for the time being you can select the abstract text, and translate it therfore, when editing the item detals. We'll improve it that is also selectable in non-editing screen.
