I could see us incorporating a tool like that, either as an option while saving or as a way of cleaning up existing snapshots, but it would take some work.

Having said that, another restart, plus cleaning out the trash folder has done the trick, and the sync appears to be working once again.

Update - I ran the export again but no success. Then I ran again and the relevant references appear in the bibtex file. After cleaning some stray characters the bib integrated fine.
