A workaround is to create a saved search with search condition: Date added or date modified in the last 1 day or 1 week (or whatever you prefer). This obviously does not find items you have only read, but it finds items that you have annotated.

I think it is a very good idea to only save snapshots if there is no pdf. Obviously the best solution would be if there were an option to select it (as per adamsmith' point), but I assume this is tricky as this is done in the translators.
