    This is pretty much always caused by the file being saved in another format, run through Google Docs, etc. Just editing it in Word and using the plugin wouldn't break the citations. It's also possible

    Don’t edit the citation directly in Google Docs, correct the item in your Zotero library. The document will automatically update when you add the next citation or click Refresh.
