do it on Word for Mac and definitely not on Google docs. Word for Windows or LibreOffice on any system should work fine, though still take time.

Again, in Google Docs it comes from the Zotero Connector, which you can install from the download page. Word works totally differently.

I'm not sure what "zotero disappears from our docs" means. You're saying you don't see the Zotero menu in Google Docs? That should appear as long as you have the Zotero Connector installed.

The citation unlinking happens not during the upload, but when Google Docs saves the docx file (i.e. after a small edit).
