You could try manually setting the Startup folder location in Word Preferences -> File Locations.

Okay, so it is likely that your edits somehow broke Zotero citation integration. Most probably it's just a single citation that's causing havoc. you should see the debugging broken documents instructions, particularly point 8, to isolate it quickly.
-
Click "Refresh Citations" in Zotero addon interface and see if that helps. There will be no progress-bar and Word/Zotero might appear like they've frozen, depending on how big the document is, so just let it run.

We have had a few reports of this for Word 2016 with the Zotero 4.0 plugin interface, but this is the first one for the updated plugin. You could try these recommendations by Microsoft, reinstall the Zotero plugin and see if the Tab appears.
-
You need to post the Debug ID here for us to find it. Also try the manual installation instructions linked above.

By "can't connect to Zotero" do you mean you don't see the toolbar at all, or does the toolbar do nothing?
-
So just to clear up confusion, do you see Zotero toolbar on your new MacBook in Word? If you do, then Zotero should certainly be listed under View (as it would be for the old Mac).
-
Also check under View menu in Word whether Zotero is present and checked.

If you run Zotero 5.0.8 it will import all your proxy preferences from Zotero for Firefox automatically into the Connector. Otherwise, the Connector only detects a proxy when it notices a redirection to the institutional login page and shows a notif…

Changing the citation style to something else and back will likely clear the pref for all citations

Sorry about that. Update the Zotero Connector to 5.0.13 in Chrome

I guess you would get the message if something was accessing the TCP socket on port 19876 on your computer, which.. could be anything. There's an old piece of backwards-compatibility code for LibreOffice there. You can technically disable the Libre…

Are you instead using NeoOffice or OpenOffice.org?
-
Right. Well, that's very weird, but I've just tested with Word 2013 and can confirm that it does not respect the "Require Application Add-ins to be signed by Trusted Publisher" checkbox like it does in Word 2016 so that's likely what you're seeing. …

The Zotero Connector does not add any default proxies, in fact, you are shown a notification that you need to press "Accept" on to have those entries added. If you have users who use their computers both on- and off-campus, then they will need to be…

You have to sign in with a Zotero account to use WebDAV syncing as your metadata is still synced on zotero.org, only files and attachments are stored on a WebDAV server

Could you produce a Debug ID of a "simulation" of this issue by disabling your internet connection and getting to the broken state, then enabling the connection and submitting a Debug ID? If it's not triggered when manually disabling the connection…

Are you running the Zotero client on this machine, when pressing the buttons in Word? Word 2008 only exists for MacOS, are you running MacOS or Windows and which version of Word?
-
If you share the document with someone who uses Google Docs or similar, opening and saving the document in those editors will remove the Zotero link to citations. If you are sharing with someone who uses LibreOffice, you should make sure in the Zote…

This is a problem related to 32-bit LibreOffice/JRE as discussed in this thread https://forums.zotero.org/discussion/comment/281808/#Comment_281808 The easiest workaround at the moment is to switch to 64-bit LibreOffice (and you will need to switch…

Is it listed and checked? Do Zotero Macros appear in Developer -> Macros?
-
Could you describe what's happening in more detail? https://www.zotero.org/support/reporting_problems
-
Sorry, I linked to instructions to Word for Mac. The instructions for Word for Windows are found above on the same page.
-
Does this happen for every page or only a specific one?
-
If "Require Application Add-ins to be signed by Trusted Publisher", then there's something else going on. If you enable the developer tab and go into Developer Tab -> Add-ins, is Zotero.dotm listed? Do you see Zotero macros under Macros menu?
-
Try the manual installation instructions
-
See https://www.zotero.org/support/installation for setting up a desktop entry.

@freakatoms also highly recommended is upgrading LO to 5.3 and reinstalling the LO plugin from Zotero Preferences -> Cite -> Word Processor Plugins
-
@Abdessamadd did downgrading the kernel not help? It's not out of the question that the Mendeley plugin will have an identical problem. Also likely, that this will be fixed in later version of the kernel or JVM.
