Aha! Solved. I had the Paperpile extension on for working with Google Docs, and not surprisingly, it conflicts with Zotero, at least on Google Scholar. Thanks.

I'm afraid the links to citations are probably gone. That happens most commonly when a docx file is saved with software that doesn't support Word fields, which includes google docs, Word Online, Libre

Thanks Sebastian. So I guess I'll wait to hear back from others who have actually tried this with the 5.X beta to report back. I have too many 'production' projects going on where we rely on this RTF/

I would love to see developed a Zotero-Google Docs plugin that offers the same functionalities as the Word-plugin. Any progress on this?

Updating the OS wouldn't have made a difference. Opening and saving the file in Google Docs or any other non-Microsoft-Word software (that does not support word fields), or pressing Remove Field Codes
