This is pretty much always caused by the file being saved in another format, run through Google Docs, etc. Just editing it in Word and using the plugin wouldn't break the citations. It's also possible

Don’t edit the citation directly in Google Docs, correct the item in your Zotero library. The document will automatically update when you add the next citation or click Refresh.

Google Docs can get slow if you have many citations, but that shouldn’t affect exporting to Word. You need the beta version currently to export the document. Follow the instructions I linked to to ins
