That’s helpful, though customizing keyboard shortcuts and adding annotations as reminders by each color would be ideal.

Not as easy as letters, but you can use Alt/Option + a number to switch between tools, and the one associated with the color (i.e., Option/Alt-8 currently for PDFs) will cycle through the colors.
