If it still fails, this may be due to security software on the computer. Possible it could even be an organizational Firefox policy (e.g., to enable primary password usage) that's leaking into Zotero.

On the other hand, it *does* work with Firefox, so a least there’s a workaround.

@fzi-thomas: You would have to test, but I would expect most of the Firefox mechanisms (except for those related to the maintenance service, which we don't use) to work for Zotero.

Same as Firefox — app.update.auto set to false in prefs.js in the Zotero profile folder. Various other Firefox mechanisms (e.g., registry keys) might also work, but we haven't tested those.

I would add a need for this - my organization won't let me add a Chrome connector, but I can add a Firefox one. But Chrome is my main browser.

We were finally able to reproduce this. It should be fixed now in Zotero Connector 5.0.210 for Firefox, and we've submitted updates for Chrome and Edge, which should be available within the next day.
