After all, when Zotero is run within Wine, it works exactly as expected, syncing with native Firefox and OpenOffice or LibreOffice. There is not any *feature* loss -- only *aesthetic* loss.

When I open it in LibreOffice it is right, but converting it to .docx -- either by SaveAs in LibreOffice or with https://convertio.co/ -- reverts it back to plan text.

You need to open the ODT in LibreOffice or convert it to a DOCX file.

snapcraft.io. I think that there are other libreoffice packages listed in software center, one of them is the deb. You can also widely switch software center from snap to deb.
  10. Install libreoffice on Ubuntu

On last versions Ubuntu installs LibreOffice (LO) as a snap package, that means it lives in something like its own container and that might be why you are experiencing problems installing Zotero. When
  11. Install libreoffice on Ubuntu

Not really sure what you're asking here. Zotero has a LibreOffice plugin built-in. If you have a specific question, you'll need to ask it.

I was thinking that steps 1 to 5, at least, could be packaged into a single installer, and perhaps even a one-step conversion to .docx to save the step of opening in LibreOffice.
  16. Word cannot connect to Zotero. Please make sure Zotero is open and running.
