I'd recommend against using Word's referencing feature, which isn't very good (to put it mildly). There's no direct export from Zotero in a format Word can import, but you can either use the toolchain

work, you may need to switch to a different word processor completely as even Google Docs itself becomes very slow with large docs and dedicated desktop apps like LibreOffice or Word are better suite

@kw47 Make sure you save the LibreOffice document as .odt before transfer and then save as .docx after restoring Zotero citations in Word.

What version of Word (like 16.64) and Zotero are you using?

Have you tried restarting your mac? What's the full Word version that you have installed (like 16.64)? Generally, this is a very rare macOS bug that may be fixed by reinstalling Word.
