I tried working around this issue using conditions and the language variable and it works when testing in the style editor and with test documents but it doesn't pass the CSL Validator.

Usually our styles test for the absence of volume and pages. Does that specific citation have those? You might want to add them manually in Zotero.

Test in a new document -- does the style look right there? If not, something isn't right with the install; hard to say with a custom style.

Again, it's almost certainly something else on your system, not a problem in Zotero itself. You can test this yourself by reinstalling Zotero 6 or an older Zotero 7 beta build.
