The problem is now the same for all Word documents, including when I open an old document that used to function properly and has not been edited since.

I've always saved it as a word file, but I have collaborators, so who knows where things got FUBAR'ed.

Toggling Word field codes may help you figure out what's still an active citation. (I'd also be curious what you see for that "[2]" after toggling field codes.)

Make sure you're running the latest version of Word for Mac. A recent version was very slow, but that's been fixed.
