I added in. I just started using zotero on google docs, so maybe I'm doing something wrong? I'm adding them onto the reference list, so maybe it's the placing of my cursor?

Make sure you are not trying to insert a citation in a hyperlink. Does it not work no matter where you try inserting in this document? If you press Ctrl-K in google docs, do you get a prompt to insert

You should be able to do that, yes. Or move the document to Google Docs, again with live citations intact.
