    Don’t edit the citation directly in Google Docs, correct the item in your Zotero library. The document will automatically update when you add the next citation or click Refresh.

    When I select the optoin to add a citation to google docs I am asked for the citations syle (I chose APA)) and then I get an errror message that says that Zotero fields cannot be inserted here.

    You should be able to do that, yes. Or move the document to Google Docs, again with live citations intact.
