It's possible. With 'gvim' instead of 'vim' it's easy and you just bind your mime-type to gvim. Make sure you have these configured: export EDITOR=vim export VISUAL=vim also xdg-mime default vim.desktop text/plain

At the moment jabref has this functionality but right now as you said the only solution seems to add and merge manually. BTW, there is "unfilled" category which can be used for detects items need update metadata.
