You should uninstall Zotero and reinstall it, either via zotero-deb or, if that doesn't work, the tarball from our site. If you can't open core dialog boxes, there's a more general problem with your installation that you'll need to fix.

The last step in the troubleshooting instructions explains how to isolate the problem. Unless it still happens when you completely delete the contents of the document (in a copy of the file), you haven't done everything there.

No, sorry, if you weren't syncing, your only option would be to restore from the old data directory or a backup of it. If you're not sure what to look for, see Locating Missing Zotero Data.
