Thanks for the super-fast response. This will certainly get me started. I was aware that Zotero regularly overwrites translators, as I use a different BibTeX key. For the reasons you cite, I prefer to redo the modifications.

With regard to unread articles, I leave everything unread in the "unfiled" folder, and move them somewhere meaningful after reading... Previously I used tags and "saved search".

Yes, the problem persists in a fresh document where I only add one of these references. Yes, the problem persists when I change citation styles. (I found it using Chicago Manual of Style/Author-Date, but this doesn't seem to matter).
