For the first item, Tips and Tricks says this: To see how many items you have, click an item in the middle pane and Select All (Command-A on OS X or Control-A on Windows). A count of selected items will appear in the right pane.

What version number did you have? And which one were you trying to upgrade to?

For Word 2003, Check View/toolbars/ and see if Zotero Bibliographic Management is checked. If not, check it. If it is, post back. Other versions of Word might have this option in a different location.
