Saving from Safari has always been less reliable, especially for gated resources due to limitations of Safari, so it's unlikely it worked correctly before too. The change for the connectors is still pending.

You should download Zotero 7 and see if it works there. You might need to close Word and reinstall the Word plugin from Zotero Preferences -> Cite.

Could you go to chrome://extensions, enable the Developer Mode switch and see if you see any Errors under Zotero? Post a screenshot of them here.
