You can pause and continue with the Space bar. But there is no way to open or close Read Aloud from the keyboard.

Can you reproduce in TroubleShooting Mode (Help -> Restart in TroubleShooting Mode)? If that solves the problem, you would need to identify which plugin is causing the problem.

The new references added will still get the "F" though, so you will need to repeat the process to remove them. So it is only a temporary workaround until it can be fixed.
