I fixed the problem by editing the Normal style. It didn't have a tab spacing defined, so I defined one at 0.89 cm, and now the reference list looks nice.

I had to edit this post because Zotero connector for Chrome does seem to work, although the experience compared to Firefox is so vastly different (and poorer), that I just didn't recognize the icon.
