Can you describe exactly what you're trying to do? Nothing discussed in that (16 year old) thread is currently possible, but you can certainly search in attachments, you just aren't able to then show them without the context of their parents.

You shouldn't need the -a flag (but it won't hurt, either) but otherwise that should work. Alternatively, you could make sure the current directory is fully synced, then point back at the custom one and sync there.

Have you tried opening the PDFs with all other Zotero add-ons disabled? A couple of them are not compatible and may cause problems

You can set this up as the quick copy format just like you can for the citekeys -- not sure how you can have both work at the same time though, other than with Zutilo (which allows multiple quick-format options with different shortcuts)
