I'm not sure I fully understand. Can't you simply use the connector to import the info into Zotero? It just won't download and attach the PDF. Or do you have an URL example where this scheme doesn't work?

I get the same output with the command desktop-file-validate .local/share/applications/zotero.desktop, but it does not prevent the file to work as expected. Zotero 8.0.3 Ubuntu 22.04.5 LTS

Is this still possible in the current version of Zotero? Yes, you can see that when you click on any PDF attachement in the central pane.
