• And two and a half years later... deleting the pdftotext and pdfinfo programs and reinstalling them through the preference menu worked for me as well (Zotero stand-alone on MacOS X 10.8.5). Thanks!

• Thanks! Sure, I can do that, or just replace them with normal dashes which is also fine. It just struck me as something that might be easy to avoid for Zotero's export function.
