You can try use a backup (zotero.sqlite.bak) but if you more times open and close Zotero I am not sure, if there is different content from your current database.

You can add field "Date" in the middle collum of Zotero (click on last icon in the header of middle collum) and then sort items. It should be work correctly with all formats of date.

@adamsmith: in Firefox with Zotero add-on it works correctly. It still dos not work correctly in Google Chrome and Zotero Standalone - I get WATERER and EVANS. Translators were reset and in the second step even completely deleted.
