Page range with chapter-based numbering (e.g. “4.1-4.19”) gets “p.” instead of “pp.” in bibliography

Hello,

I'm citing chapters from technical reports where pagination is chapter-based, e.g. the TIMSS 2023 Technical Report. The publisher's suggested citation is:

> Johansone, I. (2024). TIMSS survey operations procedures. In M. von Davier, B. Fishbein, & A. Kennedy (Eds.), *TIMSS 2023 Technical Report (Methods and Procedures)* (pp. 4.1-4.19). Boston College, TIMSS & PIRLS International Study Center. https://doi.org/10.6017/lse.tpisc.timss.rs2399

**What I did**

I entered `4.1-4.19` in the Pages field of a Book Section item, using [style name and version, e.g. APA 7th edition].

**What I expected**

`pp. 4.1–4.19` in the bibliography.

**What I got**

`p. 4.1–4.19`

**What I tried**

- Entering the range as plain numbers (e.g. `1-19`) gives "pp." correctly, so the problem seems specific to the dotted values.
- Moving the chapter number to the Volume field is not a solution, as it changes the output to something like "Vol. 4, pp. 1–19", which doesn't match the recommended citation.
- Backslash escaping doesn't help, since it only prevents a hyphen from being treated as a range, which is the opposite of what I need.
- Using a colon (`4:1-4:19`) reportedly makes it plural (see https://forums.zotero.org/discussion/76497/handling-page-numbers-that-are-hyphenated), but then the colon appears in the output.

**Possible cause**

My guess is that citeproc-js only treats a hyphenated value as plural when there is a purely numeric unit on each side, so `4.1-4.19` is read as a single non-numeric unit. A similar issue with alpha-prefixed ranges (e.g. `S123-S145`) was fixed earlier, but dotted numbers like `4.1` seem not to be covered.

**Question**

Is there a supported way to get "pp." for this kind of page range without editing the style? If not, could ranges of the form `N.N-N.N` be recognized as plural, or could a page-field syntax be provided to force a range?

For now, my workaround is editing the style so that the page label is always plural.

Does putting spaces around the hyphen get the correct formatting? It’s likely a quirk with parsing numeric ranges versus ID numbers like you are saying.

If that doesn’t work, until a fix is made, I think entering “pp. ” in the field with the number should force it to format correctly
