Cannot log in to Zotero desktop on a new computer — “Invalid credentials provided”

Hello Zotero Support,

I need help resolving a login and synchronization problem.

I can access my Zotero online library, and Zotero works correctly on another computer. However, on my new Windows computer, the Zotero desktop application displays “Invalid credentials provided” when I try to sign in and enable synchronization.

I have already recovered my username and changed my password, but the problem persists. I have also installed the Zotero desktop application and Zotero Connector on the new computer, but the Connector is not saving references properly either.

I need to use the same existing library on both computers for my doctoral research. I do not want to create a separate account or risk separating my references into different libraries.

Could you please help me identify and resolve the authentication and synchronization problem without reinstalling everything again?

Thank you for your help.
  • I have the same problem though, my credentials are correct but I cannot access the Zotero desktop application. I need to insert the references into a word document but I cannot connect to my library due to this problem. Please help me.
  • Which version of Zotero -- current versions of Zotero should have you sign in through your browser, older versions are no longer supported.

If Zotero is opening the website and you're actually seeing "Invalid credentials provided", you're just entering the wrong username or password. Log out and in and carefully enter your username and password, making sure you're not mistyping or auto-filling some old password.

If you see a username and password field in the Sync settings in the desktop app, you're using an outdated version of Zotero and need to update. For security reasons, older versions are no longer able to log in for syncing.
  • Ok, thanks a lot for the support! I'm currently working from home, and my trouble has come out from my device at the office. I am afraid I was running an old version because I saw the credentials field in the Sync setting in the. desktop app.
I will certainly check it up and in case of need I will write you back.
    Thank you again
