Zotero 10.0.6: Add/Edit Bibliography fails with setText:...field.cpp in Word 365
I need help diagnosing a reproducible Word integration failure that began after updating to Zotero 10.
System
- Zotero 10.0.6 (64-bit)
- Windows 11, build 26300
- Microsoft Word for Microsoft 365, Version 2609, Build 16.0.20430.20032 (64-bit)
- APA 7th edition, although the problem occurs with other citation styles too
Problem
Adding and editing in-text citations works normally. However, clicking Add/Edit Bibliography consistently produces “Zotero experienced an error updating your document.” The same error occurs in a new, blank Word document containing only one freshly inserted citation.
The log reports:
`[setText:Y:\zotero\word-for-windows-integration\build\zoteroWinWordIntegration\field.cpp]`
Troubleshooting already completed
- Tested in a new Word document.
- Removed `Zotero.dotm` from the active Word Startup folder and reinstalled the Word add-in.
- Confirmed “Typing replaces selected text” is enabled.
- Confirmed Track Changes is off.
- Tested in Zotero Troubleshooting Mode.
- Switched between Fields and Bookmarks citation storage.
- Restarted Zotero and Word.
None of these steps resolved the problem.
Zotero Error Report ID: 381919858
The failure appears to be specific to the bibliography-writing operation in the Zotero 10 Word integration. It was working perfectly before the update but I don't remember which version I was using before I updated on 20th October. Has anyone encountered this in Zotero 10.0.6 with Word 365 Version 2609? Is there a known workaround or a confirmed compatible earlier version?
I would appreciate a targeted solution because I need to continue working on my dissertation.

Upgrade Storage
This issue is document independent. Which means even if select a new Word document, insert a citation, and add bibliography, I get the same error instantly regardless of the document. I have also delete my normal.dotm file in Word which also had no effect.
For some reason my Word itself blocked RTF Files without my knowledge and consent. Your recommendation above has fixed the issue.
Thanks once again.
