Some tag 'suggestions' appearing capitalised

When I enter tags 'by hand' a drop-down appears with suggestions based on what I've entered so far. Useful.

But recently (one month? two?) some of the suggestions are capitalised. None of my existing tags are capitalised - they are designed that way for simplicity - so where do these capitalised ones come from? Can I turn them off? They just get in the way, however 'clever' they are.

Has anyone else come across this or is it just me?

    Nothing "clever" here — tags that show up exist somewhere, either as automatic tags (if you have those hidden) or on items in the trash. The latter is arguably a bug. (Nothing new here either way.)

    Where? This isn't a pdf with a string of automatic tags. 'Automatically tag items' was indeed turned on (not by me - upgrade?) but as I say, there isn't an obvious source. There's descriptive text in Abstracts but Zotero wouldn't pull it in from there, would it?

    And why has this only just started happening? But more importantly, how do I stop it? (will it stop now I've turned off Auto tag ... no, after a close down and restart it's still there)

    Automatic tagging is turned on by default and always has been. Whether automatic tags are displayed in the tag selector is configurable in the tag selector menu.

    I'm not sure what this tone is for or how this is confusing? I'm just telling you the several places tag autocomplete pulls from. As I say, suggesting tags from items in the trash is arguably a bug, and we've just fixed it to not do that for the next version.

    Just to be clear, autocomplete is library-wide, while the tag selector only shows tags in the current scope. So if you're not in the library root, you might not see the capitalized version in the tag selector, but it will still show up in autocomplete.

    Yes sorry, I thought I was sounding a bit panicky! I like to understand how anything works, even if I can't control it. The way this has suddenly appeared is annoying as well as unexpected. And I turned autocomplete off many versions ago.

    Latest example: I entered 'qu' in case I'd got a tag for 'quern' and 'Quernmore' appeared. This is the site of a Roman pottery, so I'll have it mentioned somewhere in my library, but it's not a tag. On this basis anything could pop up and I don't like that sort of unpredictable behaviour.

    Thanks for explaining this, but I still don't know why it's happening. I just cleaned out the Bin, but I still got 'Quernmore' popping up.

    Nothing has suddenly appeared. No behavior has changed here.

    You're going to need to believe me that it's autocompleting real, existing tags from your library. "Roman" is a tag on an item in your library, and you should see it in the tag selector in the library root.

    Now this is getting weird!

    I've just tried entering every letter of the alphabet in Tags and got some MOST unexpected suggested results:

    A - Ambleside; B - Birdoswald; C - Castleshaw; D - 0; E - 0; F - 0; G - 0; H - History; I - 0; J - 0; K - Kirkham; L - Lancaster; M - Manchester; N - 0; O - 0; P - 0; Q - Quernmore; R - Ribchester, Roman, Rome; S - 0; T - Tarbock Island; U - 0; V - 0; W - Walton-le-Dale; X - 0; Y - 0; Z - 0

    Zero of course means no result. These are mostly Roman sites, so might be mentioned somewhere, and mostly in Lancashire (???) but Tarbock Island is apparently a roundabout on the M6 motorway and I'll bet you £100 it isn't anywhere on my machine! And History just comes out of nowhere.

    Sorry, missed your earlier answer. Roman _is_ in my tag pane - now, but it wasn't!

    It won't be in the tag selector in a collection, because the tag isn't on an item that's in any collections. Again, tag autocomplete is library-wide; the tag selector only shows tags on items currently appearing in the items list (including if you've already filtered the list with a tag or search).

    Yes, I think I understand: all my stuff is in My Library, so all my tags should be in the panel shouldn't they? And they are ('Beckfoot' too now) but they weren't two hours ago when I did the pic.

    I'd no idea Tags was so dynamic - that it could pick up tags without my entering them? I'll do an Export, I think, and see if the unwanted stuff is there - unless you've another idea about how to find where it's coming from?

    I don't know what you mean by this. It's just showing you existing tags in your library — tags you added manually or automatic tags that were added when you saved items. You can see those tags in the library root, and you can see the items they're on by clicking on the tag in the library root. There should be absolutely no mystery here about where tags are, and there's certainly no need to do an export.

    If you have an active filter (e.g., a search term in the quick-search bar, or a tag selected in the tag selector), the tag selector will only show tags on the items you're currently viewing.

    This is how the tag selector and tag autocomplete have always worked.

    Got it. As you say, if I've got the gumption to actually click on them and see what item they come from - and now I have, they're all from one item added in _2016_ which has managed to get its tags added.
