Feature request: APA 7 support for abbreviated group authors in subsequent citations

I would like to request improved support for APA 7 group-author and institutional-name abbreviations in Zotero’s Word processor plugin.

According to APA 7, a group author may be introduced with an abbreviation at first citation, for example:

(World Health Organization [WHO], 2024)

Subsequent citations should then use the abbreviation only:

(WHO, 2024)

In the reference list, however, the full institutional name should be used without the abbreviation, according to APA 7:

World Health Organization. (2024). …

At the moment, Zotero appears unable to automatically handle this pattern when the item is entered with “World Health Organization” as the institutional name. This requires manual editing in Word, which is error-prone in long academic documents.

It would be very helpful if Zotero allowed an optional “abbreviated name” field for institutional names. This should not be limited to authors only, but should also work when an institution is entered as an editor, series editor, issuing body, publisher, or another relevant role.

Ideally, this functionality should be available across all item types, including journal articles, web pages, reports, edited books, book chapters, and other Zotero item types.
  • This isn’t currently supported by CSL, and it likely won’t be for sometime. My personal recommendation is to enter the abbreviation as the author and the full organization name as the publisher. In my experience publishing articles in APA journals, it is an extremely common and acceptable deviation from strictly correct APA style to just use the abbreviation throughout and list the full organization name in the publisher spot.

If you do want to strictly follow specified APA style, put the abbreviated name as the author, then manually edit the first citation to add the full organization name and brackets. This will break sinking on the first citation, but that’s usually not too much of an inconvenience in my experience
