HTML appearing in citations?

edited today at 1:10am
Just upgraded to version 10.0-beta.8+40b272c46 (didn't realise I was getting beta releases) in macOS 26.5.1 and I've started getting HTML in my citations.

Is Zotero Towers aware? I'll assume this'll be fixed ...

Edit: fixed with a 'Refresh' in the Word Zotero toolbar add-in.

    (That's HTML, not Markdown.)

There was another report of this yesterday, though unclear if they're using the beta. It's possible this was caused by a beta change, or it could've been from a Word update.

If you didn't intend to use the beta, you should reinstall Zotero from the download page. Your data won't be affected.

Actually, I think I see what could be causing this for some people in the beta. We'll investigate — thanks.
  • Thanks for your speedy responses and attention to this! Really appreciate what you do.

This is fixed for the next beta, and we'll include it in a Zotero 9 release soon.

Note that it should only happen if there's some sort of error generating the preview for a citation, so it may indicate a problem with the style you're using or some other bug in the citation processor that would cause a problem in the document itself.

If you're still able to reproduce it, a Report ID after you do so — and the style you're using — would be helpful.
  • If it happens again I will certainly do that for you.

This is also happening to me. I am not using a beta (at least not to my knowledge), but Zotero is up to date. To fix I've had to close both Zotero and Word, reopen both, and refresh. I'm using CMoS 18 Shortened Notes & Bib. Report ID 1178702592.

EDIT: Maybe I *am* using a beta? "About Zotero" says it's version 10.0-beta.8+40b272c46. I have no idea how I would have installed a beta version.
  • I reported the error a few days ago. I don't think I am using Beta. How can I figure that out? When it started happening, I checked for updates and got a message saying that I was up to date.
  • Again, we've identified the cause of this and fixed it for the next beta, and we'll include it in a Zotero 9 release soon.
