FR: Support Mac Split View

There are times—such as when copying highlights from another PDF reader—when I need both Zotero and another application window open side by side. The Mac’s Split View feature is perfect for that. Unfortunately Zotero doesn’t support it.

It is already supported. Zotero 9.0.4, macOS 26.5.1
  • Okay, so it doesn’t work with *Safari.* Or Pages. But it does work with Notes and Finder.

So can it be updated to work with Safari?

On the other hand, it *does* work with Firefox, so a least there’s a workaround.

    Works for me.

From top to bottom: Word, Pages, Safari:

    Maybe a macOS version issue?
  • I dunno. Maybe it’s a screen size issue? Note the big black bar in my image; when I actually do split screen, all that’s taken up with the Zotero window, though I can then resize it.

There was this discussion two years ago, and it was related to “Displays have separate Spaces” turned off. I think is was for either macOS 12 or 13. However, disabling this option in macOS 26 disables the split view on my machine.
  • I mean, that works, sort of, but it’s not really “split view” anymore.

However, I never even knew about this setting; that’s an interesting feature.
  • Yeah, Zotero is asking for more than half of my 15” screen, and some apps are not happy with that. When I turn “Displays have separate Spaces” off, and choose “Move Window to Right Side of Screen,” about a third of the window is off the screen. I can drag it back and resize it (as I can resize it in genuine Split View), but that’s not the default.

    There’s a genuine bug here.

Just tested with Zotero 9 and Safari. It doesn't work on my Sequoia 13'' screen. It does on my Tahoe 13.6'' screen.
  • Using the forums as the primary feedback mechanism is frustrating. How do I know whether the devs have seen this and acknowledged it as a bug report?
  • According to the forum guidelines:
Zotero developers and many dedicated community members read every post.
And this post was quite active recently, so I am confident it has been read. Also, as shown in the thread, this does not affect recent macOS versions, so it is not a general bug, but a more specific one. So please give to the devs some time.
