Connector 5.0.206: Google Docs integration freezes on every action, fails in both Chrome and Firefox

edited yesterday at 2:57am
After updating both Zotero standalone (9.0.4) and the Connector (5.0.206) today, the Google Docs integration freezes immediately on "Zotero is updating your document." This happens on first citation insert, on Refresh, and in brand-new empty documents. Reproduces identically in Chrome and Firefox on macOS, and reproduces with Zotero in safe mode (no third-party plugins involved).

Symptom: Citation picker works, I can select a citation and see it written to the page, then the integration hangs at "Zotero is updating your document" indefinitely. Refresh from the Zotero menu in Google Docs hangs the same way.

Console error (Chrome DevTools, Google Doc tab):
Zotero.GoogleDocs.UI.activate is not a function
at chrome-extension://ekhagklcjbdpajgpjgmbionohlpdbjgc/zotero-google-docs-integration/client.js:150
Accompanied by repeated chrome-extension://invalid/ Failed to load resource: net::ERR_FAILED.
Zotero standalone debug output shows:
HTTP Integration Error
at chrome://zotero/content/xpcom/server/server_connectorIntegration.js
This appears to precede the Connector-side error, suggesting the integration HTTP endpoint may be the root cause with the Connector UI error as a downstream symptom.
Environment:

Zotero standalone: 9.0.4 (ARM64)
Zotero Connector: 5.0.206
macOS: 26.5 (Apple Silicon)
Chrome and Firefox both reproduce the issue
integration.googleDocs.useGoogleDocsAPI already set to true before the update
http://127.0.0.1:23119/connector/ping returns "Zotero is running" — Connector-to-standalone communication is fine

Troubleshooting already attempted:

Reinstalled Connector in both browsers
Toggled integration.googleDocs.useGoogleDocsAPI off and back on with restarts
Tested in brand-new empty Google Docs
Verified no other Chrome extensions running
Confirmed full restart of both Zotero and browser (no lingering processes)
Reproduces in Zotero safe mode

Sorry about that. This is fixed in Zotero Connector 5.0.207, available now.

(There was a change in Google Docs a few days ago that broke citing in some documents. Zotero Connector 5.0.205 included a temporary workaround. 5.0.206 was supposed to be a proper fix but ended up breaking things more, so we've reverted to the 5.0.205 workaround in 5.0.207 for now. Sorry for the trouble.)
  • Hi Zotero,

We are still experiencing issues with Zotero as we are not able to get to the updated version 5.0.207. It just states that no updates are available. I have version 5.0.205 and my partner has version 5.0.204.

I hope you are able to help :)
  • @annastoemkjaer: What browser? 5.0.207 is available for Chrome and Firefox. If you're using another browser, this thread isn't relevant and you should start a new thread with more details.
  • Okay, I am using safari, so I will start another thread - thanks!

I updated to version 5.0.208 and it works beautifully
  • @dstillman was there just another change in google docs? 5.0.208 fixed the original issue, working again this morning. As of 5:05 PM (mountain time), hitting a new error in the Google Docs console:

Google Docs UI has changed. Trying to retrieve
    [".appsDocsUiWizFindandreplacedialogInputsContainer input"]
    at ui.js:960

I thought this was fixed but unfortunately the error is still present. Hoping for a fix soon! Using Firefox browser on my MacBook Air

Edit 9:12 EST it seems to be working again? I was about to submit another output but I did not receive any error messages when I tried adding a couple more in-text citations to my document
