@dsquared: It will automatically start reading from where you last were, unless you've manually switched to a different page since then.
  • @dstillman -- ah, I wasn't clear; I had in mind seeing where the Read Aloud stopped so I can start reading (not aloud!) from that place.

Overall I've thought about some general bookmark-like annotation for Zotero. For a long book, it could be nice to have some kind of bookmark that gets saved and sync'ed. Some kind of "Read Aloud stopped here" bookmark would then let me pick up at that point for regular reading.

At any rate, though, the Read Aloud stuff is great and very much appreciated!

Well, the reader already syncs page position, so you'll be on the same page whether or not you use Read Aloud. And you can of course just click the Read Aloud button once and then stop it immediately once you see where it was.

First, a big thank you for the new feature, ive been waiting for this!!
as i am enjoying the new feature i also have some questions:

1.How can I purchase more minutes for the premium voices? Is there a top-up option?

2.The player currently sits below the toolbar as shown in the picture attached, which means it covers a fair amount of text in the reader. Would it be possible to move it to the top of the window (above the document), or to make its position configurable?

3.Is there a way to trigger playback one sentence at a time (click a sentence, hear that sentence, stop)? This would be very useful for close reading and note-taking.

Thanks again for the feature, and for all the work that went into it.
  • Will Microsoft Natural HD or Natural Voices be supported in next versions, or is MS restricting use of them for 3rd party apps?

  • I wished the annotation function would work differently. I find the time limit that the annotation is made automatically too short and if I am quite honest I don't really need the time limit with automatic annotation at all. So a function to disable automatic annotation would be great. As well as disabling automatic skip to next textpart, as often one can only really decide to annotate at the end of a sentence rather than the beginning or middle.

My user flow would be having the sentence window with which I can annotate regardless of any automatic annotation and jumping to next annotation, and only when I press a button to annotate the sentence will be annotated or wehn pressing next skipped to the next part.

Apart from that I love the read aloud feature.

@dstillman Since you mentioned it: On linux (ubuntu jammy), local voice worked at first (with the usual robotic voice) I then installed a piper based voice with Pied and got it to work using spd-say but when I restarted Zotero the local option in the speech setup window is greyed out (language unsupported). Does zotero not use speech-dispatcher on linux?
I checked the zotero debug output but there didn't seem to be anything related at startup or when opening the voice setup window in reader view.
  • OMG!! I just got to try it, and I love the voice. I wish I could just purchase the TTS function. I don't have the need to get a storage subscription, even if annually, because I have hard drives where I do everything and keep my library.
  • This is great.
Any plans on allowing us to use a custom url to generate the audio? Then we could run local models to handle those requests. The openai compatible API pattern would make this very easy.
  • Can you say which external provider you use for the premium voices? My favourite tts voices come form the app/service "NaturalReader". I tested quite a few other services...
  • Sorry for repeating my question, but I think it got lost

Is it possible to define an area in the page (every page) where text is read? Otherwise, same as when selecting text, the page header/footer is also read every time which can be annoying.
  • Guys, please, I don't need 'read aloud'. I need a citation manager that can get the basics right. 'Update Metadata' does nothing even when I can see that we have online access to the item. I tried to use Zotmeta, it did nothing. I tried to use the meta data scraper and Zotero wouldn't allow the plugin. Egh. So disappointing. Focussing on the shiny things but not the things we actually need to get our work done. Deduplication is a nightmare too. It seems broken.
