Unable to search for exact phrases in “everything” mode

When searching for attachment content in my root library (My Library) using the “everything” mode, results are generated quickly (~1 sec.) if I search for a single word (e.g., “media”). However, when I try to search for a word combination in quotes (e.g., “media studies”), the search keeps loading for quite a while (~50 sec.) and fails to return any results.

This issue was previously reported in a 2023 discussion (https://forums.zotero.org/discussion/103620/search-bar-malfunctioning) and I didn't experience it before updating to Zotero v7.
  • Attachment content is indexed by individual words, so searching for a sequence of words requires a much slower unindexed search. You can make it faster by adding more filters (e.g. Item Type is Journal Article).
  • @AbeJellinek, this doesn't seem to be the case, since I'm able to get results when searching for word combinations in my sub-libraries. This problem only affects searches using the “everything” mode in the root library (My Library), as @dstillman noted in the 2023 thread.
Also, as I mentioned before, I didn't experience it before updating to Zotero v7.
  • Could you provide a Debug ID for reproducing this?
  • Sure, @AbeJellinek: D80533700

I've carried out some search tests on each of my sub-libraries and found that one specific library doesn't return any results when I search for word combinations. I'll try to reindex all items in that library to check if it solves the issue.
  • Okay, I've checked and actually there isn't a specific sub-library with result issues. For some reason, occasionally searching for word combinations in sub-libraries returns no results, so the issue with searching in the root library probably isn't related to any item indexing.

In any case, searching for word combinations using the “everything” mode doesn’t seem to be working properly. In my case, I can’t get any results when searching in the root library, and occasionally I can’t get results when searching in sub-libraries.

The error indicated in Debug Output is DOMException: Could not allocate buffer: NS_ERROR_OUT_OF_MEMORY UnknownError: Could not allocate buffer: NS_ERROR_OUT_OF_MEMORY (No stack trace)

My computer has 32GB of RAM.
  • @AbeJellinek, the issue no longer reproduces.

I’ve replicated what @hackbunny reported in the discussion #119022 e rebuilt the index with a maximum of 50000000 characters and 10000 pages per file. After that, the search is working properly and is much faster than before.
