Can't find sources from My Library via "Cite/Edit Citation" in Zotero 7

What happened to the inline citing from Zotero 6?

In Zotero 6, when I search for a source inline via "Cite/Edit Citation", it shows results from "My Library" and "Cited". Results from My Library is very handy, and makes adding citations very fast and easy.

But in Zotero 7, it only shows results from "Selected items" and "Open Documents".

Why didn't they just add an option in the settings of Zotero 7 to choose the preferred behavior? I ended up downgrading back to Zotero 6. Will this choice be added in a feature update to 7?

The classic Add Citation dialog is not a good solution to this problem.
  • You are not searching for anything on the second screenshot. If you search for "attention is all you need", as you did on your first image, the results should be the same.

The selected items and open documents were added for convenience, for quick searching.
  • Zotero 7 definitely shows "My Library". Have you actually tried typing "attention is all you need" in the red bubble? If it is in your library, it will show under "My Library" just like Zotero 6.

The new feature, which was heavily requested in the forums (and has made my life demonstrably easier), only prioritizes open, selected and cited documents. It obviously does not remove access to the rest of your library.

I took the 2nd screenshot from here.
    https://www.zotero.org/blog/

I didn't want to reinstall Zotero 7 just to get a screenshot.

If you search for "attention is all you need" in Zotero 7, it won't show up. Instead 10+ documents you have opened always show up.

    Edit:
@enozkan Results from My Library do not show up in Zotero 7. Only selected items and open documents. At first I thought it was a bug, then I read the release notes and the blog. Unless my installation of 7 was broken? (I recall that it gave me an error because I had MS Word open during the update to 7).
  • Edit: To clarify, results from My Library do not show up in Zotero 7.
No, that's not the intended behavior. In Zotero 7, items that are selected in the main window and opened tabs appear at the top, as long as they match the search query. If nothing is typed into the search field, all selected and open items are included.

They are then followed by cited items in the document, which are then followed by the search results from "My Library" and all other groups. Those appear when something has been typed.

    For example, like this:

If you do the same thing in Zotero 7 dialog as in Zotero 6 and you are not seeing results from "My Library", something is not right. Were there no search results from "My Library" at all, no matter what you typed? Or was it specific to "attention is all you need" query?

    @abaevbog

I got no search results from My Library no matter what I typed.

But seeing your screenshot, I suspect the problem may be because I had 10+ documents open (maybe up to 20), so the list of Open Documents just cut off and left no space for "Cited" and "My Library" to show up.
  • The dialog shows up to 50 results total, with ~7 of them being visible at a time. If you have many opened and selected items that all match the search query, results from "My Library" could be pushed down lower. Then you would scroll the list of matches or use arrow down to get to them.

It is theoretically possible that "My Library" would not be included at all into the results list. But for that to occur, there would need to be 50 matches to the search query among selected and opened items, and that's fairly unlikely.
  • @abaevbog

Thanks for this explanation. Then something was definitely broken with my Zotero 7. I would search for the exact title of a paper that is in My Library and nothing will show up except for all the long list of already Open Documents. The open documents that show up are not even matching the search query, nor do they change as I type in a different search query.

I will reinstall 7 later, this time without opening MS Word while the installation is running, and I'll report back on whether that fixed the problem.
  • Yeah, that doesn't sound right. If it acts as you described, we would want a Debug ID with you opening the dialog and reproducing that behavior.
