Now available: Zotero for Android

We're excited to announce the release of the release of Zotero for Android.

You can install it from the Google Play Store.

Thanks to everyone who's helped beta test the app (and if you haven't been able to get a spot, thanks for your patience!). If you're running the beta and wish to switch to the production version, you can leave the beta program from the Play Store app on your device by going to the Zotero app listing and tapping "Leave" under "You're a beta tester". You'll stay on the current version (which is identical to the released version) until the next production version comes out.

We have a lot more planned for the app, including EPUB/snapshot annotation support, citation/bibliography generation, and improved saving from the browser, so stay tuned.

To report bugs or request new features, please start a new thread. Be sure to include "Android" in the thread title.
  • So much love for this app. You and the team are doing exceptional work. It's time to tell more of my friends to get out of their walled gardens and on to Zotero. Well done <3
  • This news is so thrilling! I've waited two years for the Android version to come out.

Thank you to the development team for your work!

Would it be possible to upload the APK to F-Droid*? Android users in mainland China are unable to access Google Play, so making it available on F-Droid would greatly facilitate access for scholars in China.

Thank you again for your valuable contributions!

    * F-Droid (https://f-droid.org/en/) is an installable catalogue of FOSS (Free and Open Source Software) applications for the Android platform. The client makes it easy to browse, install, and keep track of updates on your device.

  • Fantastic news. Big kudos to your work and efforts getting this release out the door. Been part of the beta program and it was a joy to see this app go from rather fragile to working reliably.

Looking forward to epub / html support on Android *innocent look*
  • @dstillman thank you! Thank you for all your work!
Was awaiting this for a long time!
  • Great! Thank you really!
  • Well done team Zotero!

Just installed, looking forward to trying.
  • This is amazing, big thanks to the devs!

Any idea if syncing with onedrive/Google drive will be implemented at some point? :)

  • @pourMilad: No, the mobile apps only support Zotero file syncing via Zotero Storage or WebDAV.
  • Congrats on the release!!!
  • Congratulations on the release! Zotero team is awesome. It cannot have been easy with a community of passionate but exhausted, over-caffeinated, cranky researchers going "are we there yet?" for months and months :P
  • Thanks a lot for the app. Will you be releasing an APK?
  • Yes, we plan to release an APK once we've added self-updating for non–Play Store installations. We don't want people stuck on old versions.
  • For people that use RSS/Obtanium it could be cool to publish/make new releases directly to github repo too!

(and possible some option to disable auto updating, which could not only be handy for saving battery and mobile data)
  • I am a bit confused. I have installed latests version on my cellphone and tablet, but both have very basic functions - sync and view, but no support for any kind of annotations. I cant even find settings menu) I am doing something wrong?

@skix: There's support for PDF annotations. EPUB/snapshot annotation isn't yet supported. If you're not able to find something, start a new thread and provide a screenshot of what you're looking at.

You can get to the settings by tapping back to the libraries screen.
  • Reminder for everyone who missed this in the original post:
To report bugs or request new features, please start a new thread. Be sure to include "Android" in the thread title.
That also includes questions about features.
  • I just wanted to give a massive thank you to the devs and contributors who made this happen.

I've been struggling to get an adequate tablet based note and annotation system since I started undergraduate nearly 8 years ago!!!!

Nothing has worked effectively for me.

I had been using zoo for zotero, but it didn't want to play nicely with my tablet and webdav, and it seemed that maintenance was slowing down/stopped.

I'm now able to annotate pdf's and access them anywhere!!!!!! This is huge for me and I'm sure, many many others.

    Thank you so much!!!
  • Congrats on moving out of beta!

@northword perhaps a Google Play alternative such as [Aurora Store](https://auroraoss.com/aurora-store) might work instead?
  • That's how I get it.
  • The Aurora Store just pulls from Google Play, so I don't think that solves the problem here. Again, we'll be making an APK available that will do its own check for updates, and people will also be able to use Obtanium or similar pointed at the download page.
