Word crashing when using Jurism since Sonoma update

As indicated in the title, whenever I try to make a change via Jurism, the Word document freezes. This has been happening ever since the Sonoma update.

This happens e.g. when I try to add a citation or view document preferences. I have tried disabling add ons, restarting both Word and Jurism, but have had no luck.

Any tips would be very much appreciated.

Juris-M is based on an earlier version of Zotero. The Zotero development team, if involved at all in Juris-M development, seems to only involved in technical assistance to allow continued syncing to the Zotero site.

The lead developer of multi-lingual Zotero also contributed to early Zotero development. He was for a time *very* active with the development of Juris-M -- all as a volunteer. Then suddenly he was silent and Juris-M seems to be maintained by other volunteers. I miss hearing from Frank Bennett and hope that his absence here and with Juris-M is not an indication of continuing distress* but a sign that he is now focusing on something else that is important and wonderful.

  • So there are no solutions at all for this issue, then? And I have to stop using Juris-M?
  • No one said that. Seek help at: https://juris-m.github.io/#

Juris-M is a different project and definitive help is not available here.
  • I cannot access the mailing list. Nothing happens when I sign up. Is there an equivalent forum I can use?

@DWL-SDCA: I don't think there's much point in suggesting that there's help to be had. It's true that we can't provide Jurism support here, but we know the app isn't actively maintained, and it doesn't serve anyone to suggest otherwise.

Jurism isn't going to magically work with Word on Sonoma unless Frank updates it to Zotero 6.0.29 code. He has said (as recently as a few days ago) that he's working on Jurism again, and I'm sure the word will get out if there are any new developments, but for now, I think it's safe to say that people shouldn't be counting on Jurism coming back anytime soon.
  • Here Frank's most recent statement about it (I believe):

    https://indieweb.social/@fgbjr/111688083029578261

Sounds like he is back to coding in general, but like Juris-M won't be updated until Zotero 7.
  • I encountered this too with Juris-M and have managed to grab the fix from Zotero and rebuild the word plugin. This is totally unofficial, but might offer temporary relief until the Juris-M developer is able to offer an official update. I've put details here if anyone else wants to try it out: https://gist.github.com/bblackham/42d8ec4ec8ae04852fecc513357fadcb
  • @bernard61 Thanks for the quick fix. You wrote that one needs to grant Jurism full disk access rights. What's the technical reason for this? IIRC the fix only replaces one file Jurism is successfully accessing already?

(Not that I fear harm thereof.)
  • @gduffner I'm not 100% clear on the specifics but I believe Sonoma has increased restrictions on sandboxes, E.g. described here: https://github.com/zotero/zotero-word-for-mac-integration/issues/35
I couldn't get it to work without full disk access and I haven't spent time investigating why.
  • Thanks for the explanation. Today I finally upgraded to Sonoma and I was able to get your fix to run without granting full disk access. I'm curious if it will stay this way.

Anyways, thanks a lot, @bernard61 for your work!
