Highlighting in PDFs without text layer

Hey there!

So some (many) PDFs dont have a text layer. Often OCR doesnt work properly. For those cases it would be very handy to just be able to highlight text in color. There does not need to be a text layer for that. Just the „select area“ tool would be great here if you can just select an area and mark that in any color - just like you would do on paper with an actual marker pencil.
Maybe theres already an addon for that? I didnt find it then

What do you think of that?

Thx
  • You said you're good with the "select area" tool, and boxes can already be of different colors.
  • Well, the Select Area tool isn't meant for this — it creates image annotations, and you wouldn't want to use that as a highlighter and have an image generated for every single line.

Really, though, @Eseila, the best thing to do is just to OCR the documents so you can get proper highlighting and text extraction.

Beyond that, if the goal is really just to draw on the document, you could underline using the ink annotation tool in the iOS app. It's not currently possible to create ink annotations on the desktop.
