Adding item type
I need yto be able to add for item type: Catalogue; Instructions, booklet, etc. Why not allow the user to have a window at the bottom of items types allowing them to add item types that are not already presupplied?
Category: Value
(However, not all styles will be prepared to include all information for all item types.)
Beyond that, let's take a step back. What are Sales Brochure, Sales Catalogue, Notebook? What exactly are those? How are you expecting those to be cited?
Please keep posting here in this thread.
A curator variable has also been added.
To indicate an exhibition catalog, make a Book item and then add a curator and/or event variable.

For research protocol -- can you give an example? I think there's a whole range of items: study protocols, registered reports, (pre-)registrations that might be nice to get into a single item type. @bwiernik -- did we ever look at that for CSL?
I see it kind of similarly to how we use Report also for things like manuals. That said, we did also great a Project type for grants and the like because of their distinct citation needs compared to other types of reports.
What do you think @adamsmith?
For now, @claireystew, I suggest Report for protocols.
- tutorial
- lecture notes
If these could be added, or if there could be a custom option to add "item types" that would be great.
- tutorial
- lecture notes
would be useful additions to item types.
I'd also have very much like a "Lecture Notes" item type. I use Zotero to store my uni lecture notes and would like to have a distinction, since lecture notes are not really fully-fletched books nor some mere documents...
I'd also add custom properties for the lecture course (apart from author, date and the standard ones), maybe
- faculty/department
- university
- course name (e.g. "Higher Mathematics"
- course level (1, 2, 3)
- course identifier (something like PHYS010)
But maybe this is a bit overkill? In the end it would still be exported as e.g. @misc type in biblatex.
To my mind, a lecture note is something in the middle between 'book' and 'manuscript'. Properties for publishing (e.g. ISBN, publisher) are non-sensical for lecture notes.
On the other hand, lecture notes rarely are allowed to be redistributed, so a citation would only make sense for internal works like homework papers or open-access lecture notes.
Has anybody else thoughts on this and does anybody know how to petition for a new item type?
- the Extra field
- a child note with a line for each piece of extra information you wish to add in order to categorize the item further
- tags
- placing items in collections for your particular categories
- saved searches for one or more of the identifiers above
The primary purpose of item types is to allow them to be cited in publications in the correct format dictated by publishers. It is not really the aim to have item types for everything that a user might add to Zotero. New item types are added from time to time, but that is relatively rare.
