Zotero is not responding to importing a RIS file.

My Zotero Standalone is 5.093, the latest edition. Does not import any records from a RIS file.

What exactly happens when you try? How big/long is the RIS file and where is it from?
  • If I tried to transfer records directly to Zotero from the online database, I see a message, "This item could not be saved because Zotero is not open or is unreachable. Please open Zotero and try again" in the Connector. My Zotero Standalone is open. When I try to import a ris file I saved on my computer to Zotero Standalone, it imports 0.
  • I see a message, "This item could not be saved because Zotero is not open or is unreachable. Please open Zotero and try again" in the Connector.
Do you get an "Is Zotero running?" message when you try to click the save button normally (not relying on RIS interception)? If so, see https://www.zotero.org/support/kb/connector_zotero_unavailable
When I try to import a ris file I saved on my computer to Zotero Standalone, it imports 0.
Can you provide a Debug ID from Zotero for that?
  • No I have never seen the message "Is Zotero running?" Server is connecting Ok. Will do about Debug ID.
  • Not sure what you mean by "Server" — this is about the Zotero Connector talking to the Zotero app. I'm asking if you're able to save webpages directly to the Zotero app by clicking the save button while on a webpage (e.g., this forum page). The error you're getting about RIS suggests that the connection isn't working, but that may not be the actual problem.

Can you provide a Debug ID from the Zotero Connector (not Zotero) for the Connector RIS issue?
  • @yoshidaa: I don't know why you sent us an email, but support happens here. All we need is the Debug IDs I've asked for, posted here. You sent error output that we didn't ask for.
  • I can download a record from the page I am visiting with the Connector. This happens when I want to directly import records in RIS format to Zotero.
  • The online database that I am working with allows me to directly import selected records in RIS format to Zotero or to download a file in RIS format and import it to my Zotero Standalone.
  • We can't help you further without the Debug IDs I asked for.
  • I sent a bunch of Debug ID's to support@zotero.org. Thank you!
  • No, you didn't. As I said, you send some error output that isn't relevant.

We're happy to help you, but we can only do so if you read the instructions I've linked to repeatedly and provide the information I asked for.
  • OK, here is Debug ID: D914198122
  • The above Debug ID was generated when I tried to directly import selected records in RIS from the online database.

Debug ID: D109687328. I received this when I tried to import a downloaded RIS file into Zotero Standalone.

(2)(+0000008): Translate: Detect using BetterBibTeX JSON failed:
Start by resetting your translators from the Advanced → Files and Folders pane of the Zotero preferences. You still have an old translator from BBT, which you don't have installed.

If you still get an error after that, we'd want to see another Debug ID for trying to import the RIS file into the app.
  • How do you reset your translators from the Files and Folders pane in Advanced menu?
  • Go to the Files and Folders pane of the Zotero preferences and click Reset Translators.
  • Thank you! It downloaded everything and is perfect.
