adamsmithElsevier recommends including DOIs on submission even if they're not included in the print article (they're used e.g. for the CrossRef links in the HTML version and generally help publishers to check references)

DWL-SDCAedited December 3, 2019It is my understanding that the editors of AEM want DOIs with submitted manuscripts to facilitate checking references during the review process. I haven't reviewed a manuscript submitted there in a couple of years but last time I did the references were available to me through Elsevier-proxied DOIs. I thought that it was nifty-keen!
