Style Request - Harvard that suppresses pincite page numbers

edited August 23, 2019
So I'm submitting a paper to the Royal Statistical Society, which says its style is Harvard. And looking at a sample issue, the inline references all omit a page number. But then, when I apply a Harvard style in Word, eg "Sage - Harvard", the page number is included. So is there a way to specify the page number but not have it appear? I've currently got all the page numbers in and don't want to lose them.

Many thanks, W.

PS Specification of style request now further down in thread.

true for "Harvard" but the underlying question is whether it's possible to have an author-date style that doesn't print locators (answer: yes) and presumably also whether we have such a style, to which the answer is also yes. Here (without any checking) is a list of possible candidates you may want to look at:

    derived using

  • Thank you both for your advice. I went through the list and picked what seemed likely styles but without any success. The ones I tried were:

    - WHO Regional Office for Europe - Harvard
    - Springer Basic (author-date)
    - Springer - MathPhys (author-date)
    - SAGE - Harvard
    - Cell.

So maybe there is no style that does this.
  • We can have a look at making such a style, but will need more info. Especially the examples outlined and a link to the guidelines:
    https://www.zotero.org/support/requesting_styles
  • Style request.

Journals of the Royal Statistical Society - Series A (but possibly the others, too)
General specification is Harvard. See https://wol-prod-cdn.literatumonline.com/pb-assets/hub-assets/rss/Notes_for_Authors_2019-1552404816963.pdf
    Journal DOI DOI:10.1111/(ISSN)1467-985X
The citation format is exactly that for the SAGE - Harvard style (and many others) but even if a pincite page specification has been added to the reference, the pincite is suppressed and not displayed.
    Sample OA article: https://rss.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/rssa.12391
  • Thought this will take me 5min, but the style has many more differences to SAGE Harvard:
    - et al. in italics
    - authors initiliased
    - author name separated by comma
    ....

Anyway, I have submitted the style: https://github.com/citation-style-language/styles/raw/807109cfe24a65bf49c761dda6f817c1e323743a/journal-of-the-royal-statistical-society.csl (right clicke, save as...)
  • Thanks damnation --- will review shortly.

    That said
    - WHO Regional Office for Europe - Harvard
    - Springer - MathPhys (author-date)
    - Cell

will definitely not print out page numbers for in-text citations, so if they do for you, @williamcb , something is not right and also won't work correctly for the new style. Could you try this out in a new document? How are you switching citation styles?
  • 1. That's very odd. I (add and) switch styles in Word by:

    Go to Zotero pane
    Click Document Preferences
    In Zotero, click Manage Styles
Add the relevant style and return to Zotero Document Preferences
    Highlight the new style
    Click OK
    In Word, click Refresh.

    2. I've restarted Word and Zotero and that has done the trick. The WHO style now removes the pincites.
  • OK, great. Not sure why that didn't work before the restart.

(Note that you can simply install styles by clicking on them on zotero.org/styles ; there's no need to interact with "Manage Styles" except to remove installed citation styles)

(I forgot to remove the in text locator from that style with all the other adaptions. Will to tomorrow.)

edit: this one has the locator removed> https://github.com/citation-style-language/styles/raw/9dbd8a2c34fc031a9a27499b3282f9c61e19d01f/journal-of-the-royal-statistical-society.csl
