Don't see a toolbar in Mac Word 16.27

This discussion was created from comments split from: Zotero tool bar for Microsoft 365? (Mac OSX 10.12.3).
  • This situation sucks. I have Word 16.27 on a MacBook Pro and don't see a tool bar. Am not able to print a bibliography - the option doesn't appear anywhere. Have struggled to resolve this for hours and am about to un-recommend the software for colleagues, unless there's a simple solution. Thanks.
  • See https://www.zotero.org/support/word_processor_plugin_troubleshooting#zotero_toolbar_doesn_t_appear

If it's not working, you'll need to say exactly what you did and what happened at each step.
  • The immediate problem is that I'm trying to make a bibliography, and online instructions and videos say you have to highlight the titles to be included in the bibliography, then right click and a menu will pop up that includes the option to make a bibliography. I'm stuck at highlighting the titles, because if I click on the title or creator, it takes me right into the paper, so there's no opportunity to highlight it and move on to highlight another paper. I'm on the My Library tab - is this the wrong place to start? I'm using Word 16.27 and Mac OS Mojave 10.14.5 on a MacBook Pro. Would be very grateful for any help.
  • It sounds like you might be using the Zotero website? Any instructions about "Zotero" are referring to the Zotero software that you install on your computer. That's what you want to be using.

Once you've installed that and synced your library, you'll want to do your work there. You can generate one-off bibliographies within Zotero itself or use the word processor plugin.

  • Thanks, but I don't think I'm using the website. I downloaded Zotero and click on the Z icon to get started (although it's weird how doing this takes me to the "Welcome to Zotero" page rather than the login page). Zotero also is listed in my Applications folder and the Zotero.dotm appears as an add-in. I noticed that in one video, Modzilla Firefox was being used. I'm using Safari 12.1.1 --could this be part of the problem?

It's a question of what you're actually interacting with, not whether you installed Zotero. Zotero is a program on your computer — when you interact with it, you'll be using Zotero, not your web browser. You referred to a My Library "tab", which is what you can see at the top of this webpage. "My Library" also appears at the top of the left-hand pane in the Zotero software.

Look at the screenshot on the Zotero homepage. Is that what you're using?

If you are, then see the two pages I linked to for instructions. Among other things, for one-off bibliographies, you described clicking on an item rather than right-clicking. (Right-click on a Mac just means Control-click.)
