Can't open zotero for mac on OSX 10.14.2

I just download and install the latest version, but it can't open. I have tried restart my computer, uninstall and install zotero again but it still doesn't work. I have searched this problem but can't find any solution.

The screenshot can be seen on:

  • We've never seen that before. I'd guess that there's something installed on your computer that's breaking this. The crash is in the Compositor thread, which would point to something related to graphics or fonts. (What Mac is this?)

In case it's font-related, you could try opening prefs.js from your Zotero profile directory in a text editor (e.g., TextEdit) and adding these two lines:

    user_pref("general.useragent.locale", "en-US");
    user_pref("intl.locale.matchOS", false);

(If they already appear in the file, change them to the above.)

That will force Zotero to use English.

If that doesn't work, and you know how, I'd check for any non-standard kernel extensions, launch agents, or launch daemons on your computer.
  • I experience the same issue. Same OS, same error. Everything is in English though.

  • @vvinogradov: What Mac?

Have you checked the things I suggested above (kernel extensions, etc.)?

If you close Zotero, temporarily rename "Zotero" in your home directory to "Zotero-Old", and restart Zotero (i.e., with a fresh data directory, assuming your data directory is in the default location), does it still happen? (If so, you can rename the folder back.)

Does it happen if you delete and redownload Zotero?

How about if you open the Go menu in Finder, select "Go to Folder…", paste in ~/Library/Caches/Zotero, and then delete the 'updates' folder?
  • Hi, thank you for responding.

    The Mac is:

Model Name: MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Early 2015)
    Model Identifier: MacBookPro12,1
    Processor Name: Intel Core i5
    Processor Speed: 2.9 GHz
    Number of Processors: 1
    Total Number of Cores: 2
L2 Cache (per Core): 256 KB
    L3 Cache: 3 MB
    Memory: 8 GB
    Boot ROM Version: 180.0.0.0.0

I have deleted and reinstalled Zotero a few times. Same error.
Following your advise I have renamed the folder, started Zotero and got the same error.
I don't have an 'update' folder in '~/Library/Caches/Zotero'.

I have not installed any other apps since last time Zotero worked. Is something related to Mojave?

    Thank you
  • I removed Zotero completely again (and again...), tried the beta version. Same error, Zotero wouldn't start.
  • If you go to ~/Library/Internet Plug-Ins or /Library/Internet Plug-ins (note that those are two different directories, and you need to check both), do you see a fbplugin file? If so, delete it. If you don't see it or that doesn't help, you can try moving any other plugins to a "Disabled Plug-ins" subdirectory.
  • ~/Library/Internet Plug-Ins was completely empty.
/Library/Internet Plug-Ins did not have fbplugin in it. I moved all other plugins.
Reinstalled Zotero (it is 5.0.60 now).
    Same error message:

  • Can you copy the entire crash log and send it to support@zotero.org with a link to this thread?
  • Clean install of Mojave solved the issue. Thanks
