Standalone+Chrome = no icon in address bar for any site

It was working normally around 12:45 EST and as of 4p it's not working at all (not on Amazon, not on Google Scholar, not on Web of Science, nowhere). The normal paper, book, or folder icons that should be to the left of the star (favorites) icon in the address bar are not there.

I have
* reset the translators in Standalone
* uninstalled and reinstalled the Chrome add-in
* deleted the translators folder in my data directory
* restarted both Zotero and Chrome and my computer more than once

I have a silver Zotero button to the right of the address bar which gives me Options, Remove from Chrome, Manage Extensions, etc. On Amazon it also gives me a book icon (still not in the address bar) but when I click it I get an error message "An error occurred while saving this item. Check Known Translator Issues for more information. It also put the following in the connector errors section of Zotero Connector Preferences: [JavaScript Error: "Cannot use 'in' operator to search for 'length' in null" {file: "chrome-extension://ekhagklcjbdpajgpjgmbionohlpdbjgc/zotero/utilities.js" line: 1042}]. I reported this under ReportID 2040136102

When on Google Scholar the silver icon to the right of the address bar gives me only the menu list.

I sent what I had in the error window from standalone in as report 1384666031

Any ideas?

I don't know what "silver icon" you're referring to — Zotero doesn't currently add anything to the Chrome toolbar other than the save icon in the address bar. I think you must be referring to another extension's icon?

And the book icon on Amazon would be in the address bar, so I'm also not sure what you mean by "On Amazon it also gives me a book icon (still not in the address bar)".

You can take a screenshot, upload it somewhere, and provide a link, but in terms of the book icon, can you provide the Amazon URL you're trying to save from and a Debug ID from Chrome for the save attempt?

On Chrome 48.0.2564.116 m in Windows, the URL bar icon has moved next to the URL bar for me (I'd call it grey, not silver, but we're talking about the same thing here). It works normally, though and does turn into the regular icons (folder book etc.) as before.

I'd want specific URLs for the pages referenced above, though, and more generally running through

I am not referring to another extension's icon as this one gives me Zotero options. The link is and image of the new silver icon I have not seen before this afternoon with the options it gives me on a Google Scholar search results page:

@adamsmith I've run through all the troubleshooting as I thought I detailed in my initial message - including specific troubleshooting steps for FF even though I'm in Chrome. What additional information do you need?

1) Google scholar and amazon are supported sites
2) Zotero version is 4.0.28.7
3) not using FF
4) it's everything - there are no known issues on everything
5) I have
* reset the translators in Standalone
6) I have clicked the update button more than once
7) no icons except the book in Amazon
8) did not get an unresponsive script warning
9) system clock is fine

Oh, yeah, that seems to be a change in Chrome as of today (or very recently) — I see the same after updating to the latest version. We'll have to make some changes if that's going to appear all the time now. Thanks.

For saving, Kindle versions aren't currently supported. Just switch to one of the other versions (e.g., hardcover) and it should work.

Ok - went to the print version and it's now not working in a different way. I click the book and it give me the "saving item" popup at the bottom of the window but it's just sitting there for over 2 minutes

Unfortunately, it still doesn't explain why I can't save from Google Scholar or other sites where I could save from this morning.

OK, then I still need a Debug ID for a save attempt that fails. (A Debug ID isn't the same as a Report ID.)

Hmm, that's definitely not right. You're sure you reset your translators, and you haven't made any manual translator changes? And you've restarted both Zotero and Chrome since resetting translators?

Just to be sure, reset translators again in both Zotero and the Advanced pane of the Chrome preferences. (I think restarting Chrome has the same effect, but I'm not positive.)

Hurrah! I reset the translators again AND my Chrome version updated AGAIN to Version 49.0.2623.75 m from Version 48.0.2564.116 m where it was yesterday and now it works. It may have just been a thing with that version of Chrome.

It looks as though Chrome changed the placement of buttons in version 49, and they can no longer be in the address bar: see this and this.

yeah, I did remember that. Odd, because for everyone else this only changed with Chrome 49, you had it in 47.
Maybe there's an experimental feature preference or so you had toggled.

edit: or Google does secret A/B testing with Chrome releases. I wouldn't put it past them. You were the treatment group ;)
