Folder icon instead of article icon for some journal article items

I am having a similar problem to that of rkeller (see link to thread below). I have included URLs where the URL bar icon should be the article icon but are a folder icon instead. When I click on the folder icon, only one article option is presented. In some cases (see Lancet urls) the single item presented is not the correct item.

More and more of the sites I'm going to are showing a folder icon instead of the traditional paper icon for the zotero capture
I am using Zotero FF on a Mac (OS 10.10.2).
FF 36.0.1
Zotero FF

The following are journal articles where icon in URL field is folder not article yet only one item appears in folder window instead of a listing with tick boxes:

Correct item but folder icon not article icon
http://www.thelancet.com/journals/lanpsy/article/PIIS2215-0366(14)00118-7/abstract
http://www.actamedicainternational.com/Article.aspx?id=51&volume=2&issue=1&type=0

Wrong item appears (the translator picks up something else):
http://www.thelancet.com/journals/lanpsy/article/PIIS2215-0366(14)00130-8/abstract
http://www.thelancet.com/journals/lanpsy/article/PIIS2215-0366(14)00118-7/abstract

  • That's simply because Zotero switched its behavior to always displaying a folder icon when it picks up DOIs on the page, even if it's just a single DOI. The reason for that is in the last two examples you give. DOIs are often picked up for items that are not the subject of the page being viewed, so making the user select from a list ensures that (s)he is importing that article (s)he wants.
  • However, in this case:

    http://www.thelancet.com/journals/lanpsy/article/PIIS2215-0366(14)00129-1/abstract

Although the correct DOI is on the page in the form of a link, only one item is included and it is not the DOI associated with the article in question. Thus, a related article, and only the related article, is offered for import into Zotero.

I realize that these problems are more related to the way Lancet and other journals are handling their metadata that to Zotero translators. I greatly appreciate the effort of Zotero to compensate for their shortcomings.
  • I get two items in the list for that page, but I also don't have access to the full article, so that might account for the difference.

Can you provide a Debug ID for reloading that page and then clicking the URL bar icon? (don't need to actually import the item) https://www.zotero.org/support/debug_output

Though I'll say that one reason why Zotero may not display an item in the list that clearly has a DOI listed on the page is if Zotero is not able to retrieve any metadata for that DOI (e.g. the DOI is registered with mEDRA and not CrossRef)
  • @aurimas - remember the current Zotero for Firefox version still has the multi-DOI issue that you wouldn't see in Chrome.
  • @DWL -- there is a current issue with the DOI translator in Zotero for Firefox that prevents it from picking up more than one DOI on a page at a time, and I think it's usually the last one.
IIRC aurimas have a fix for that waiting to be accepted.
  • Thanks. That would explain the problem. Do you require a debug? That will need to wait until tomorrow afternoon.
  • I don't think so no -- I don't have access to that page, but both aurimas and I have been able to reproduce this elsewhere.
  • In Firefox, you can right click on the zotero folder icon and choose the Embedded Metadata translator instead. That should give you the correct data here.
  • Doh, of course. https://github.com/zotero/zotero/issues/647 no fix yet unfortunately
  • I'm having the problem that no matter the website I go to (PubMed, Google Scholar, Value in Health, ScienceDirect) only the folder icon appears and it's the DOI translator. If I click on it I get the message "Could Not Save Item. An error occurred while saving this item".

I'm using FireFox 37.0.2 and Zotero 4.0.21.5. All non-zotero extensions and plugins have been disabled.
  • Oh, I've already gone to preferences and manually updated translators.
  • Sorry. I updated Zotero and it's working fine now.
  • update Zotero -- 4.0.21 isn't compatible with Firefox 37 do you have auto-updating of Zotero disabled on purpose or did that just not work?

    If the latter, see: https://www.zotero.org/support/kb/updates_not_detected

(If the former, please always make sure you're running the latest version before reporting a problem).
  • Usually FireFox tells me there's an update. It didn't this time. Only after I left the messages did I see a warning on Zotero.org that my Zotero version wasn't compatible with FF 37. (Nice feature of your website, by the way.)

    Sorry to waste your time.
