Zotero icon no longer appears for easy entry

After getting a new CPU (reloaded software) I no longer get a Zotera icon when trying to save e.g. PubMed citations/abstract into my Zotera bibliography. How can this be fixed?
  • I've tried as best I could (I am far from being a computer wiz) to follow the suggestions on your link, but no success.

Zotero version: 4.0.11; Firefox version: 23.0.1; operating system Windows 7 Professional, 5.2 Windows Experience Index, 64 bit OS.

An example of when a Zotero icon does not work:

    What can I try next?
  • The Zotero version - is that Standalone or the Firefox plugin? Remember you need the Firefox plugin even if you use Standalone. You can check which version of Zotero for Firefox (if any) is installed under Tools-->Add-ons --> Extensions in Firefox.
  • Nothing there except in grey "Ask toolbar 21.51433 disabled". Where do I get the correct add-on? Also nothing in Plug in that says anything about Zotero.
  • Hello,
I believe I have the same problem/question as Marg Friesen, that is, I downloaded zotero 4.0 for Windows 7 and have spent 14 hours trying to figure out why there is no icon for zotero (neither book or folder) in the search bar - (not in firefox or google chrome). I think I am close to having it work, but I need the option "create new item from current page" - not "create new item from web page" (that comes with all the web info in the citation). I get this option in both the drop down when right clicking in the search bar scrolling down to "zotero" and when hitting the third icon in the library bar - neither provide a simple citation option, eg., if wanting the citation info for Krugman, Paul The Great Unraveling.
Does anyone know what preliminary step am missing here? Thank you so much.
  • Jen -
but I need the option "create new item from current page" - not "create new item from web page" (that comes with all the web info in the citation).
no, those two options were just renamed.

You want a URL bar icon to import items with their metadata.
If you don't get it, start here:
    http://www.zotero.org/support/kb/no_address_bar_icon
    then run through
    http://www.zotero.org/support/troubleshooting_translator_issues
and if nothing helps, provide _all_ the information requested in the last step.
  • so, I finally managed to get Zotero Word for Windows Integrat..3.1.13.SA.4.0.11 instaled as an extension (also Zotero LibreOffice... which I don't think I need). Still no Zotero icon to enter citations. Then, after trying to open a download of Zotrto-WinWord-Plugin-3.1.13.xpi I got closed out of the Zotero program and cannot reopen it - I get a message that says XUL Runner has stopped working. I restarted my computer and still got the same message. Now what?
  • I would just re-install Zotero, sounds like the easiest solution (re-installing will leave your data in place).

Once you've done that, I still don't understand what you're trying to do. Above you're asking about an icon in Firefox, correct? How does the Word plugin (which you do not need to install when you run Zotero Standalone, btw.) figure in there?

To get this working you will not have to do anything complicated - so anything that seems like it's complicated (such as downloading and opening .xpi files) you do not want to do. There are really just two steps - download and install Zotero Standalone, and download&install the extension for your browser - in your case Firefox.
  • Can we start from square one. where do I go to find the Standalone for installation? Where do I find the the downlada and install the extension?
You only want to use that page and you only want to use the right-hand side of that page. Click on "Zotero 4.0 for Windows" then download and install. Once you're done, click on the little Firefox icon right below it and install that.
  • Hi Adam, I tried to install the plugins because someone before you said I needed that. In any case, I followed your instructions and then restarted my computer. Got a message saying Standalone had been installed but could not open it - again got the "XUL runner has stopped working message". Next?
  • you can also go ahead and install the Firefox extension. When you first run it, tell it to share its data directory with Zotero Standalone (you'll be prompted for this and sharing is the default). You will then be able to work with Zotero for Firefox until the Standalone issue is sorted out.
  • Hi Adam, I hope you continue being patient... where do I go and how do I install the Firefox extension (I need details). Thanks.
  • Using Firefox, go to
    http://www.zotero.org/download/
click on "Zotero 4.0 for Firefox" you'll likely have to allow and OK a couple of times, but everything will happen basically by itself once you click on that. (Going to sleep now)
  • Done. Now how do i get to my Zotero Firefox library? I've always done it through Standalone before (or at least it opened up at the same time when I clicked on the Zotero/Standalone icon).
  • Click the Zotero icon at the bottom of the Firefox window. If you don't have the icon, then go back to http://www.zotero.org/support/kb/no_status_bar_icon and follow it carefully.

If Zotero Standalone is open, clicking the Zotero icon will bring Zotero Standalone to the front instead and Zotero for Firefox will function the same as the Chrome/Safari plugins. If Standalone is closed, the Zotero pane will open in Firefox.
  • The word Zotero was at the bottom right hand side and opened both the Standalone and Firefox nicely. But I'm still left with my original problem. i went on Pub Med and still no icon (what is the proper name for this - the icon that will automatically enter a citation)?
  • (And forget about Standalone for the moment. Test this in Zotero for Firefox with Standalone closed.)
  • After restarting my computer, Zotero libraries are sort of working - can get into My Library and the online library but what I have does not look or work as smoothly as before. The Easy entry with the Zotero icon also works! Thank you very much for persevering.

I used to be able to double click the Online library and get the Zotero home page but can no longer do this. I needed to do a search for Zotero and open from that to get to the Forums(could also have gotten in through my Forum emails). If you have any ideas on what is going on here, i would appreciate knowing what they are.

I'll start another conversation with the "XUL Runner has stopped working" problem.
  • I used to be able to double click the Online library and get the Zotero home page but can no longer do this.
I don't know what you mean by this. We need the exact text you see on screen that you're referring to.
  • Actually it does open when I double click my Online Library. I could not see it at first because it was "under" my library screen. Somehow my screen has been "split" and I get both the libraries I'm working on and a screen above it if I move the arrow to change the horizontal bar between the two screens. So - I guess it's all good. Thanks.
